As a Training / Learning specialist in your organisation, how do you...

  • Ensure that the right training priorities are aligned to the current or changing business goals?
  • Justify the training budget you need against other priorities and expenditure?
  • Maximise return on investment with clear measurable outcomes?
tna - training needs analysis

The answer to all three questions is, of course, a Training Needs Analysis (TNA for short.) By undertaking a robust TNA process, you are able to demonstrate a clear line of sight from business objectives, through training needs to training solutions. And, more importantly, help you to achieve better return on investment from your training spend.

Why should I bother with a TNA?

Organisations which value completing a TNA, tend to find it easier to:

  • Meet their business needs through training.
  • Specify what staff have to be able to do in the workplace.
  • Identify in a valid and reliable manner, what training needs actually exist.
  • Design, develop and deliver training which is targeted to meet business needs
  • Assess what individuals can do as a result of the training.
  • Prove whether or not training has been cost effective.

Typically, the main purpose of a TNA is to identify training needs in relation to the organisation, specific job holders and individuals.

How is a TNA undertaken?

Our approach to undertaking TNAs can be flexible to match the needs of any organisation, and usually comprises the following phases in varying levels of detail:

Phase 1:  Preparation
Identifying key people and , through interview, establishing the nature and extent of the business problem, the job holders involved, the type of information required, and the means by which the information is to be collected.

Phase 2:  Data Collection
Using questionnaires, structured interviews, observation schedules, work diaries, project documents, etc.,to collect information from a sample of the identified target audience in order to  confirm the real issues and needs

Phase 3: Data Analysis
Collating questionnaires and information from other sources to analyse the results. This is also about measuring current performance and desire performance and understanding what gaps exist where.

Phase 4:  TNA Report
Production of a comprehensive report highlighting recommendations, risks and issues, etc., that needs to be addressed. Also outlining, at a high level, the typical training and non-training solutions that need to be developed and implemented.
